Death in the Barn

 

The next afternoon was hot and sunny. As it was Sunday, the men did not have to work and a lot of them were playing horseshoes near the bunk-house.

In the barn it was quieter; the resting horses were chewing hay and rattling their chains gently. Flies were buzzing through the warm air and the sun was shining through the cracks of the barn walls.

다음날 오후는 화창하고 뜨거웠다. 일요일이라 일할 필요가 없었고 많은 사람들이 막사 근처에서 말굽던지기를 했다. 헛간은 더 조용했다. 말들은 쉬면서 건초를 씹었고 조금씩 체인을 쩔렁였다. 헛간 담의 갈라진 틈새로 햇살이 빛났고 따뜻한 공기 속으론 파리들이 윙윙대고 있었다.

 

One end of the barn was piled high with new hay. At the other end, Lennie was sitting alone in the hay. Beside him was the wooden box which was the puppies' nest. Lennie was looking at a little dead puppy which was lying in front of him. He looked at it for a long time. Then he put out his huge hand and stroked the puppy from one end of its body to the other.

'Why did you have to die?' Lennie said softly. 'You aren't as little as mice. I didn't press your head very hard.' He bent the puppy's head up and looked at its face. Then he said to it, 'Maybe George won't let me look after the rabbits now if he finds out that you're dead.'

He made a little hole in the hay, laid the puppy in it and covered it with a pile of hay.' But he continued to stare at the pile that he had made.

At that moment, Curley's wife came into the barn. She entered quietly, so that Lennie did not sec her at first. She was wearing her light cotton dress and the shoes with the little red feathers. Her face was made up and the little hanging curls were all tidy. She was quite near to Lennie before he looked up and saw her.

그때 컬리의 부인이 헛간으로 들어왔는데, 조용히 들어와서 레니는 처음에 그녀를 보지 못했다. 가벼운 모직 드레스를 입고 작고 붉은 깃이 달린 신을 신고 있었다. 그녀는 레니가 눈을 들어 쳐다보기 전에 꽤 가까이까지 왔다.

 

Lennie was frightened and he covered the dead puppy with more hay.

'What have you got there?' she asked.

Lennie looked down at the hay. 'George says I mustn't talk to you,' he said.

레니는 겁에 질려 죽은 강아지 위에 더 많은 건초를 덮었다. 거기 뭐가 있죠? 그녀가 물었다. 레니는 건초를 내려다봤다. 조지는 내가 당신과 말하면 안 된다고 했어요. 그가 말했다.

 

Curley's wife laughed and knelt in the hay next to him.

'Listen,' she said. 'All the men are having a horseshoe competition outside. It's only about four o'clock. Nobody's going to leave the competition before it finishes. 'Why can't I talk to you? I never get the chance to talk to anybody. I get terribly lonely.'

컬리의 부인이 웃으며 그 옆의 건초에 무릎을 꿇고 앉았다. 들어봐요, 그녀가 말했다. 밖에선 모두들 말굽던지기 경기를 하고 있죠. 이제 겨우 네 시 경이에요. 경기가 끝날 때 까진 아무도 거길 떠나지 않을 거에요. 왜 내가 당신과 말할 수 없죠? 난 아무하고도 말할 기회가 없었어요. 난 끔찍하게 외로워요.

 

'Well, I'm not supposed to talk to you,' said Lennie. 'George is afraid I'll get into trouble.'

'What have you got in the hay there?' she asked, changing the conversation.

'Just my puppy,' he said sadly, and he moved the hay so that the girl could see it.

글쎄, 난 당신과 말하면 안 돼요, 레니가 말했다. 조지는 내가 문제를 일으킬까봐 그래요. 거기 건초 안엔 뭐가 있죠? 대화를 바꿔 그녀가 물었다. 그냥 내 강아지에요, 그가 슬프게 말하곤 건초를 치워 여자가 보게 했다.

 

'Oh, he's dead,' she cried.

'He was so little,' said Lennie. 'I was just playing with him. I thought he was going to bite me. I pressed his head a little . . . and . . . and he was dead.'

'Don't worry,' said Curley's wife kindly. 'You can get another one.'

'Yes, I know,' Lennie continued miserably, 'but now George won't let me look after the rabbits.'

아, 죽었어요. 그녀가 소리쳤다. 너무 조그맸죠, 레니가 말했다. 난 그냥 놀아준 건데, 날 깨물려는 것 같아서 머리를 살짝 눌러줬는데... 그런데... 그런데 죽어버렸어요. 걱정하지 말아요, 컬리의 부인이 친절하게 말했다. 하나 더 얻을 수 있을 거에요. 네, 알아요, 레니가 비참하게 계속 말했다. 하지만 이제 조지는 내가 토끼들을 돌보지 못하게 할 거에요.

 

'Why won't he?'

'Well, he said that if I do any more bad things, he won't let me look after the rabbits.'

She moved closer to Lennie and spoke kindly again. 'Don't worry about talking to me. Can you hear the men shouting outside? They're playing for money and nobody will leave till the competition is over.'

'If George sees me talking to you!' Lennie said nervously, 'he'll get angry with me. He told me that.'

왜죠? 그게, 내가 나쁜 짓을 더 하면 토끼들을 돌보지 못하게 할거랬거든요. 그녀가 레니에게 더 가까이 다가와 다시 친절하게 말했다. 나하고 말하는 건 걱정하지 마요. 밖에서 사람들이 소리지르는 거 들리죠? 그들은 돈을 걸고 놀고 있으니까 경기가 끝날 때까진 아무도 떠나지 않아요. 만일 조지가 내가 당신과 얘기하는 걸 보면! 레니가 불안하게 말했다. 그는 화를 낼 거에요. 그가 그렇게 얘기했어요.

 

Her face grew angry. 'What's the matter with me?' she cried.

'Can't I talk to anybody? You're a nice fella. Why shouldn't I talk to you? I'm not doing anything wrong to you.'

'Well, George says you'll get us into trouble.'

'Oh, rubbish!' she exclaimed. 'What am I doing wrong now? Nobody here cares about my life. I'm not used to living like this. I could have done something better with my life,' she added thoughtfully, 'Maybe I will, one day.'

그녀가 화난 표정을 지었다. 내가 뭐가 문젠데요? 그녀가 소리쳤다. 난 아무하고도 말할 수 없나요? 당신은 괜찮은 사람이에요. 왜 내가 당신과 얘기할 수 없나요? 난 당신에게 잘못하는 게 아니에요. 그래도, 조지는 당신이 우리를 문제에 빠뜨릴 거라고 했어요. 오, 헛소리! 그녀가 외쳤다. 내가 지금 뭘 잘못하고 있나요? 여기 누구도 내 삶을 신경 쓰지 않아요. 난 이렇게 사는 덴 익숙하지 않아요. 난 내 삶에서 더 낳은 것을 할 수도 있었어요. 생각에 잠겨 그녀가 덧붙였다. 아마도 언젠간 그렇게 할 거에요.

 

Then she started to tell Lennie about her life. She talked quickly. 'I come from Salinas, not far from Soledad,' she said.

'one day a travelling theatre came to the town and I met one of the actors. He told me that I could travel with them. But my mother wouldn't let me go because I was only fifteen. If I had gone, I wouldn't be living like this, believe me.'

그리고 나서 그녀는 레니에게 자신의 삶에 대해 얘기하기 시작했다. 그녀는 빠르게 말했다. 난 살리나스에서 왔어요, 솔닷에서 멀지 않죠. 그녀가 말했다. 하루는 유랑극단이 마을로 와서 배우 하나를 만났죠. 그는 내가 함께 여행해도 된다고 했어요. 그런데 엄마는 내가 고작 열다섯이라고 날 보내주지 않았죠. 그때 갔다면, 믿어줘요, 이렇게 살고 있진 않을 거에요.

 

Lennie stroked the dead puppy again. 'We're going to have a little ranch - and rabbits,' he explained.

The girl continued her story quickly, before Lennie could interrupt her again.

레니는 다시 죽은 강아지를 쓰다듬었다. 우린 작은 목장하고 토끼들을 가질 거에요, 그가 설명했다. 레니가 또 끼어들기 전에 여자가 그녀의 이야기를 빨리 계속했다.

 

'Another time, I met a man who worked in films. I went dancing with him. He said that I could be a good actress. He promised to write to me as soon as he got back to Hollywood.' she looked carefully at Lennie to see if he was listening.

다른 한번은 영화일 하는 사람을 만났어요. 그 남자와 춤추러 갔는데, 그는 내가 좋은 여배우가 될 수 있다고 했지요. 헐리웃에 돌아가는 대로 편지 쓴다고 약속했는데, 그녀는 레니가 듣고 있는 지 주의 깊게 쳐다보았다.

 

'I never got that letter,' she continued. 'I think my mother stole it. I asked her if she'd taken it, but she said she hadn't. 'Well, I didn't want to stay in Salinas, so I married Curley. I met him when I was out dancing . . . Are you listening?'

'Me?' said Lennie. 'Yeah, I'm listening.'

'Well, I haven't told anybody about this before,' the girl went on. 'Perhaps I shouldn't. I don't like Curley; I really don‘t.’

편지는 결코 받지 못했죠, 그녀가 계속했다. 엄마가 빼돌린 것 같아요. 가져갔냐고 물어봤는데, 아니라더군요. 어쨌건, 살리나스에 머물고 싶지 않아서, 컬리랑 결혼했죠. 춤추러 나갔을 때 만났어요... 당신 듣고 있어요?

저요? 레니가 말했다, 예, 듣고 있어요. 글쎄, 아무에게도 이런 이야기는 해본 적이 없어요, 여자가 계속했다. 아마 하면 안 되겠죠. 난 컬리를 좋아하지 않아요. 정말로요.

 

Because she had told Lennie one of her secrets, she again moved closer to him and was now sitting next to him. 'I could have been in films and worn lovely clothes like those famous film stars,'she continued. 'I could have sat in those big hotels in Hollywood, and people would have taken photographs of me. I could have gone to film shows without paying for a ticket because I would have been one of the actresses. Oh, those lovely clothes and that man said I could have been a great actress.'

She looked up at Lennie and made a gentle movement with her hand and arm to show that she could act.

비밀 하나를 얘기했기 때문에 그녀는 다시 그에게 다가갔고 이젠 바로 옆에 앉아 있었다. 난 영화에 출연하고 유명한 스타들같이 사랑스러운 옷들을 입을 수 있었는데, 그녀가 계속얘기했다, 헐리웃의 큰 호텔들에 앉아 있으면, 사람들이 내 사인을 받았을 텐데. 배우중 하나니깐 영화 쇼에도 표를 사지 않고 들어갈 수 있었을 거고요. 아, 사랑스러운 옷들, 그리고 그는 내가 훌륭한 여배우가 될 수 있다고 했어요. 그녀는 레니를 올려다보며 손과 팔로 상냥한 몸짓을 해서 그녀가 할 수 있는 연기를 보여줬다.

 

Lennie sighed heavily. From outside came the noise of a horseshoe hitting the iron stake and the men cheering. As the sun went down, the light shone through the cracks and climbed up the barn walls, over the heads of the horses.

Lennie said, 'Maybe if I took this puppy outside and threw him away, George would never know that I'd killed him. Then I could look after the rabbits without any trouble.'

레니는 무겁게 한숨을 쉬었다. 밖에서는 말굽이 철봉에 부딪히는 소리와 사람들의 환호성이 들려왔다. 해가 지면서 벽 틈새로 비치는 햇살은 헛간 벽을 따라 올라가며 말들의 머리 위로 움직였다. 레니가 말했다, 강아지는 갖고 나가서 버리는 게 낫겠어요. 조지는 내가 죽인 걸 결코 모르겠죠. 그러면 아무 문제없이 토끼들을 돌볼 수 있어요.

 

Curley's wife said angrily, 'Don't you think about anything except rabbits?'

'We're going to have a little ranch,' Lennie explained proudly. 'We're going to have a house and a garden and an alfalfa field. The alfalfa is for the rabbits.'

'Why do you like rabbits so much?' the girl asked.

컬리의 부인이 화나서 말했다. 당신은 토끼밖에 생각 안하나요? 우리는 작은 목장을 가질 거에요. 레니가 자랑스레 설명했다. 우리는 집과 정원과 알팔파 밭을 갖게 될 거에요. 알팔파는 토끼들을 위한 거죠. 당신은 왜 그렇게 토끼들을 좋아하죠? 여자가 물었다.

 

Lennie had to think before he could answer this question - He carefully moved nearer to her until they were sitting very close together. 'I like stroking nice things,' he said. 'once I saw one of those long-haired rabbits. They were really nice. Sometimes I stroke mice, but not when I can get something better.'

Curley's wife moved away from him a little. 'I think you're mad,' she said.

'No, I'm not,' Lennie explained seriously. 'George says I'm not. I like to stroke nice, soft things with my fingers.'

The girl felt more relaxed again and she smiled at Lennie.

아니, 난 아니에요, 레니가 심각하게 설명했다. 조지는 내가 미친 게 아니라고 했어요. 나는 손가락으로 좋은 부드러운 것들을 쓰다듬는 걸 좋아하는 거에요. 여자가 다시 좀 더 편하게 느꼈고, 레니에게 웃어보였다.

 

'You're mad,' she said, 'but you're a nice fellow in a way. You're just like a big baby. I can understand what you're talking about, though. When I'm brushing my hair, sometimes I just sit and stroke it because it's so soft.'

She ran her fingers over the top of her head. 'Some people's hair isn't soft,' she continued, 'and Curley's hair is just like wire. But mine is soft and fine. I brush it a lot, you see, and that makes it fine. Here - feel it just here.' She took Lennie's hand and put it on her head. 'Feel it there and see how soft it is.'

Lennie's big hands started stroking her hair.

'Don't make it untidy,' she said.

'Oh! That's nice,' said Lennie, and he stroked harder. 'Oh, that's nice.'

'Be careful, you'll make it untidy,' the girl repeated, and then she cried angrily, 'Stop now. You'll make my hair all untidy. 'She moved her head quickly and Lennie grabbed her hair and held it tightly.

'Let go!' she screamed. 'Let go!'

어지럽히지는 마요. 그녀가 말했다. 아, 정말 멋진데, 레니가 말하곤 더 세게 쓰다듬었다. 아, 정말 멋진데. 조심해요, 지저분하게 헝클지 마요, 여자가 다시 말했다, 그리곤 화가 나서 소리쳤다. 이제 그만해요. 내 머리를 다 더럽히잖아요. 그녀가 재빨리 머리를 움직였고, 레니는 머리카락을 꼭 잡았다. 놔줘요, 그녀가 비명을 질렀다. 놔줘요!

 

Lennie was frightened by the girl's scream and his face was twisted with fear. The girl screamed again, and Lennie put his other hand over her mouth and nose.

'Please don't yell,'he begged. 'George will be angry.'

레니가 여자의 비명에 겁을 집어먹었고, 그의 얼굴은 공포로 뒤틀렸다. 여자가 다시 비명을 질렀고, 레니가 다른 손으로 그녀의 입과 코를 덮었다. 소리지르지 말아요. 그가 애원했다. 조지가 화낼 거에요.

 

She struggled violently and tried to scream for help, but Lennie's hand prevented her from making much noise. Lennie began to cry with fear. 'Oh, please don't yell,' he said again. 'George will say that I've done a bad thing. He won't let me look after the rabbits.'

여자가 격렬히 저항했고 도와달라고 외치려 했지만, 레니의 손이 그녀가 소리 내는 걸 막았다. 레니는 겁에 질려 울기 시작했다. 오, 제발 소리지르지 마, 그가 다시 말했다. 조지는 내가 나쁜 짓을 했다고 할거야. 그는 내가 토끼들을 돌보지 못하게 할거야.

 

Lennie moved his hand a little and the girl's screaming became loud again. Then Lennie grew angry. 'Don't!' he said. 'I don't want you to yell. You'll get me into trouble; George said you would get me into trouble. Now stop it!'

레니가 손을 약간 움직이자, 여자의 비명이 다시 커졌다. 그러자 레니도 화가 났다. 그만! 그가 말했다. 당신이 소리치는 거 원치 않아. 당신은 날 문제에 빠뜨려, 조지는 당신이 날 문제에 빠뜨릴 거라고 했어. 이제 그만!

 

She continued to struggle, and her eyes were filled with terror. Lennie shook her angrily. 'Don't yell,' he said, and shook her again. Her body jumped suddenly and then she lay still. Lennie had broken her neck, and she was dead.

He stood up and looked down at her. Then he carefully took his hand away from her mouth. She lay still.

그녀는 계속 저항했고, 그녀의 눈은 공포로 가득 찼다. 성난 레니가 그녀를 흔들었다. 소리치지마, 그가 말하면서 다시 그녀를 흔들었다. 그녀의 몸이 갑자기 뛰어오르더니 다음엔 조용해졌다. 레니가 그녀의 목을 부러뜨려버린 것이다. 그리고 그녀는 죽었다. 그는 일어나서 그녀를 내려다봤다. 다음엔 조심조심 그녀의 입에서 손을 뗐다. 그녀는 조용히 누워 있었다.

 

'I don't want to hurt you,'he said, 'but George will be angry if you yell.' When she neither answered nor moved, he bent down over her. He lifted her arm and let it drop. For a moment he seemed confused. Then he whispered in fear, 'I've done a bad thing. I've done another bad thing.'

당신을 다치게 하고 싶지 않아. 그가 말했다. 하지만 당신이 소리지르면 조지가 화낼거야. 그래도 대답하지도 움직이지도 않자 그가 그녀 위로 몸을 구부렸다. 그는 그녀의 팔을 잡아 들어올렸다가 떨어뜨렸다. 잠시동안 그는 혼란에 빠졌고, 다음엔 공포에 질려 속삭였다. 난 나쁜 짓을 해버렸어. 난 또 나쁜 짓을 해버렸어.

 

He moved some of the hay with his hand and partly covered her with it.

From outside came the sound of men shouting and cheering. Now Lennie remembered where he was and who was outside. He stood still and listened. It seemed that nobody had heard what had happened in the barn.

그는 손으로 건초를 조금 옮겨서 부분부분 그녀 위에 덮었다. 밖에선 사람들이 소리치고 환호하는 소리가 들려왔다. 그제서야 레니는 그가 어디 있는지, 밖에 누가 있는지 기억했다. 그는 조용히 서서 소리를 들었다. 헛간에서 무슨 일이 일어났는지는 아무도 들은 것 같지 않았다.

 

'I've done a really bad thing,' he said. 'I shouldn't have done that. George is going to be angry. He told me to hide in the trees till he comes. That's what he told me to do if I was in trouble.'

Lennie looked at the dead girl again. The puppy was lying close to her. Lennie picked it up. 'I'll throw him away,' he said.

'I've got enough trouble.'

난 정말로 나쁜 짓을 했어, 그가 말했다. 해서는 안 되었는데. 조지가 화를 내겠지. 그가 올 때까지 나무 사이에 숨어 있으라고 했는데. 그게 내가 문제를 만들었을 때 그가 하라고 한 거야. 레니는 죽은 여자를 다시 쳐다보았다. 강아지가 그녀 가까이 놓여 있었다. 레니는 그것을 주워들었다. 던져버려야겠어. 그가 말했다. 난 문제를 충분히 만들었으니까.

 

Lennie put the puppy under his coat, crept to the barn wall and looked out between the cracks. Then he crept to the door of the barn and went out.

The sun was shining high up on the walls now, and the light was growing soft in the barn. Curley's wife was lying on her back, and she was half covered with hay.

레니는 강아지를 코트 밑에 놓고는 헛간 벽으로 기어가 틈새로 밖을 내다보았다. 다음에 그는 헛간 문을 기어서 빠져나갔다. 태양은 이제 벽을 높이 비추고 있었고 헛간의 빛은 점점 약해지고 있었다. 컬리의 부인은 건초로 반 쯤 덮인 채 등을 대고 누워 있었다.

What Will Happen to Lennie?

 

After Lennie had gone away, it was very quiet in the barn. Even the noise of the horseshoe game seemed to grow quieter. In the barn it was getting dark, although it was still bright outside. The puppies' mother, a shepherd dog, came in. The smell of Curley's dead wife came to the dog's nose, and the hair rose along her back. She made a noise and hurried to the wooden box, where she jumped in among the puppies.

레니가 가버린 후 헛간은 매우 조용했다. 심지어 말굽던지기 소리도 조용해진 듯 했다. 밖은 아직 밝았지만 안은 어두워지고 있었다. 강아지 어미인 양치기 개가 들어왔다. 컬리의 죽은 부인의 냄새가 개의 코에 닿자, 어미개는 등의 털을 곤두세웠다. 개는 소리를 내면서 나무 상자 쪽으로 서둘러 갔고 거기 새끼들 사이로 뛰어들었다.

 

The body of Curley's wife lay half covered with yellow hay. Now her face seemed different. The unhappiness and the ambition had all disappeared. Now she was very pretty and simple, and her face was sweet and young. The make-up on her cheeks and lips made her look as if she was alive and asleep. The curls of her hair were spread on the hay behind her, and her lips were parted.

컬리의 부인의 몸은 노란 건초에 반쯤 덮여있었다. 이제 그녀의 얼굴은 달라보였다. 불행과 야망이 모두 사라져버려 매우 예쁘고 단순했으며 얼굴은 달콤하고 젊었다. 뺨과 입술의 화장은 마치 그녀가 살아서 잠든 것처럼 보이게 했다. 작게 말린 머리카락이 뒤의 건초 위에 퍼졌으며 입술은 벌어져 있었다.

 

The peace was broken by old Candy's voice as he came into the barn. 'Lennie,' he called. 'Oh, Lennie! Are you in here? I've been thinking about the ranch again, and I'll tell you what we can do.'

Candy came closer to the dead body. 'Oh Lennie!' he called again, and then he stopped. He had noticed Curley's wife. His body stiffened and he rubbed the side of his arm on his face. 'I didn't know you were here,' he said to her.

When the girl did not answer, Candy stepped nearer, ‘you shouldn't be here,' he said. 'you should be at home.'

Candy suddenly realised that something was wrong. He moved down nearer to her. 'Oh,' he cried. He looked around helplessly and rubbed his face. Then he jumped up and went quickly out of the barn.

In a moment Candy came back with George.

'What do you want to tell me?' asked George.

Candy pointed at Curley's wife. George stared at her.

'What's the matter with her?' he asked. Then he stepped closer. He knelt down beside her and put his hand over her heart. After a while he stood up slowly and stiffly, his face and eyes hard and cold.

Candy said, 'How did it happen?'

George looked coldly at him. 'Don't you know?' he asked, and Candy was silent. 'I should have known that this would happen,' George said helplessly. 'Perhaps I did know, really.'

George took a long time to answer. 'I suppose . . . we've got to tell . . . the men. I suppose we've got to find Lennie and put him in prison. we can't let him get away. The poor fool would starve.'

George tried to imagine Lennie's future. Maybe he'll be put in prison and treated kindly.'

But Candy said excitedly, 'We ought to let him get away. you don't know Curley very well. Curley will want to have Lennie hanged. Curley will make sure he's hanged.'

George looked at Candy. 'Yes,' he said at last. 'you're right; Curley will do that. so will the other men.' George looked down again at Curley's wife.

Then Candy spoke about his greatest fear, his fear about the future. 'You and I can buy that little ranch, can't we, George? Can't we?'

Before George answered, Candy lowered his head and looked at the hay. He knew the answer.

George did not answer this question. He said, 'I'll work for a month. Then I'll take my fifty dollars' pay and stay in a brothel all night. Or I'll sit in a bar and drink whisky until everybody goes home. Then I'll come back and work for another month, and I'll have another fifty dollars.'

Candy said, 'Lennie's such a nice fellow. I didn't think he'd do anything like this.'

George was still staring at Curley's wife. 'Lennie didn't do this because he's cruel,' he said. 'He's done a lot of bad things, but he's not a cruel man.'

George stood up and looked at Candy. 'Now listen. We've got to tell the other men. They've got to catch Lennie, I suppose. There's no other way. Maybe they won't hurt him. I won't let them hurt him. Now listen carefully. The men might think I helped to kill Curley's wife, so I'm going into the bunk-house. In a minute I want you to go out and tell the men about her. Then I'll come out and pretend that I haven't seen her. will you do that for me?'

'Of course, George,' said Candy. 'Of course I'll do that for you.'

'OK,' said George. 'Wait two minutes, then run out and tell the men that you've just found her. I'm going now.' George turned and went quickly out of the barn.

Candy watched George go. Then he looked helplessly at Curley's wife. 'You're a real whore,' he said fiercely. 'You made Lennie kill you and I suppose you're glad. Everybody knew that you'd make trouble. You were no good and you're no good now, you whore.'

Candy started crying, and his voice shook. 'I could have worked in the garden on that ranch,' he continued sadly. 'And I could have washed the dishes for Lennie and George.'

Tears filled Candy's eyes as he spoke. Then he turned and went sadly out of the barn.

Outside, the noise of the horseshoe competition stopped. The sound of running feet came towards the barn, and the men rushed in: Slim, Carlson, Whit and Curley, with Crooks behind them. Candy came in after them, and George last of all. The men ran to the end of the barn. They found Curley's wife there, stopped and looked at her.

Slim went quickly to her and felt her wrist. He touched her cheek with one of his fingers, and then he put his hand under her head, feeling her broken neck. When he stood up, the other men moved towards the dead girl and stared at her.

Suddenly Curley realised what had happened. 'I know who killed her.' he cried. 'It was Lennie. I know he did it. All the other men were outside playing horseshoes.'

Curley became wild with anger. 'I'm going to get him,' he shouted. 'I'm going to fetch my shotgun and I'll kill him myself! I'll shoot him in the stomach. Come on, you men!' He ran quickly out of the barn.

'I'll get my pistol,' said Carlson and he ran out too.

Slim turned quietly to George. 'I suppose Lennie must have done it,' he said. 'Her neck's broken. Lennie could have done that.'

George did not answer, but he nodded slowly. His hat was pulled down on his forehead and his eyes were covered.

Slim sighed. 'Well, I suppose we've got to go and find him,' he said. 'Where do you think he went?'

George took a long time to speak. 'He'll have gone south,' he said at last. 'We came from the north, so he'll have gone south.'

George moved closer to slim. 'Do you think we could catch Lennie and have him put in prison?' he asked. 'I'm sure he didn't mean to kill the girl.'

Slim nodded. 'We might be able to do that,' he said. 'We might, if we could stop Curley. But Curley will want to shoot him. Curley hasn't forgotten how Lennie broke his hand.'

'I know,' said George. 'I know.'

Carlson came running in. 'The dirty bastard has stolen my pistol,' he shouted. 'It isn't in my bag.'

After Carlson came Curley, carrying a shotgun. He was calm now.

'All right, you men,' Curley said. 'Crooks has got a shotgun. Take it, Carlson. When you see Small, don't give him a chance to escape. Shoot at his stomach. That'll make him fall.'

칼슨이 뛰어들어왔다. 그 더러운 상놈이 내 권총을 훔쳐갔어. 그가 소리쳤다. 가방에 없어. 칼슨 다음엔 컬리가 장총을 들고 들어왔다. 그는 이제 침착해졌다. 좋아, 친구들. 컬리가 말했다. 크룩스에게 장총이 있어, 그걸 가져가게, 칼슨. 스몰을 보면 달아날 기회를 주지 말고, 배를 쏴버려. 그럼 그도 거꾸러질 거야.

 

Whit said excitedly, 'I haven't got a gun.'

Curley said, 'Whit, I want you to go to Soledad and get the sheriff. Let's go now.' He turned suspiciously to George. 'You're coming with us,' he said to him.

'Yes,' said George. 'I'll come. But listen, Curley. The poor fool's mad. Don't shoot him. He didn't know what he was doing.'

'Don't shoot him?' cried Curley. 'He's got Carlson's pistol. Of course we'll shoot him.'

George said, 'Maybe Carlson lost his pistol.'

'No,' said Carlson, 'I saw it this morning. Somebody has taken it.'

윗이 흥분해서 말했다. 난 총이 없어요. 컬리가 말했다. 윗, 난 자네가 솔닷에 가서 보안관을 데려왔으면 하네. 지금 가자고. 그는 의심스러운 눈길로 조지를 향했다. 당신은 우리와 함께 가지, 그가 말했다. 그러지, 조지가 말했다. 가겠네, 하지만 듣게, 컬리. 그 불쌍한 바보 녀석은 미쳤어. 그를 쏘지 말게. 그는 자기가 뭘 하는지도 몰랐어.

그를 쏘지 말라구? 컬리가 소리쳤다. 그는 칼슨의 권총을 갖고 있어. 당연히 우린 그를 쏠거야. 조지가 말했다. 어쩌면 칼슨은 권총을 잃어버린 걸지도 모르잖나.

아니, 칼슨이 말했다, 난 오늘 아침에도 총을 봤어. 누군가 가져간 거야.

 

Slim stood looking down at Curley's wife. He said, 'Curley, maybe you should stay here with your wife.'

Curley's face turned red and he was furious again. 'I'm going,' he said. 'I'm going to shoot that bastard,_I'm going to get him!'

Slim turned to Candy. 'Will you stay here with her then, Candy?' he said. 'The rest of us have got to go now.'

Candy nodded and then moved away. George stopped for a moment beside Candy, and they both looked down at the dead girl. Then George moved slowly after the other men, sadly dragging his feet.

After they had gone, Candy sat down in the hay and looked at the dead girl's face. 'Poor fool,' he said softly.

The sound of the other men died away into the distance. In the barn it was gradually getting dark and the horses moved around, rattling their chains. Old Candy lay down in the hay, covered his eyes with his arm and wept quietly.
