Back to the Pool

 

In the late afternoon, the deep green pool of the Salinas River was still. The sun was shining on the tops of the Gabilan mountains, but in the valley it was getting dark.

Suddenly Lennie appeared out of some trees near the pool. He went quietly to the edge of the pool, knelt down and drank, hardly touching the water with his lips. A little bird made a noise and Lennie quickly raised his head to see where the sound was coming from. When he saw that it was only a bird, he lowered his head and drank some more water.

When he had finished, he sat down on the bank with his side to the pool. He kept looking to see if anybody came along the path. Lennie put his arms around his knees and spoke softly to himself, 'I didn't forget what to do; oh no, I didn't forget George's words. "Hide in the trees and wait for George." '

Lennie pulled his hat down over his eyes. 'George is going to be angry with me,' he continued. 'George is going to wish he was alone, without me causing trouble for him.'

Lennie turned his head and looked at the bright mountain tops. 'I can go away up there and find a cave,' he continued sadly. 'If George doesn't want me . . . I'll go away. yes, I'll go away. 'I think I'll go away now,' he said. 'George isn't going to let me look after the rabbits now.'

Suddenly there was the sound of footsteps on the path. Lennie looked up and saw George walking towards him.

Lennie got up on his knees. 'You aren't going to leave me, are you, George?' he asked. 'I know you aren't.'

Walking slowly and carefully, George came closer and sat down next to Lennie. 'No,' he answered.

'I knew you wouldn't,' cried Lennie. 'You wouldn't do anything like that.'

George was silent.

'George,' said Lennie,

'Yes?'

'I've done another bad thing.'

'That doesn't make any difference,' said George, and he was silent again.

Only the tops of the mountains were lit by the sun now and the shadow in the valley was blue and soft. From the distance came the sound of men's voices.

'George,' said Lennie again.

'Yes?'

'Aren't you going to get angry with me, George?'

'Get angry?'

'Yes,' said Lennie. 'You know what you always say to me. you say, "lf I didn't have you, I'd take my fifty dollars . . ." '

조지는 천천히 주의깊게 걸어서 가까이 다가와 레니 옆에 앉았다. 안 버릴 거야. 그가 대답했다. 그럴 줄 알았어. 레니가 소리쳤다. 네가 그런 짓을 할리가 없어. 조지는 조용했다.

조지, 레니가 말했다. 응? 나 또 나쁜 짓을 했어. 그건 별 차 없어, 조지가 말한 후, 다시 조용해졌다. 이젠 오직 산꼭대기에만 햇빛이 비쳤고 계곡은 푸른 그림자로 덮여 구분이 없어졌다. 멀리서 사람들의 목소리가 들려왔다.

조지, 레니가 다시 말했다. 응? 나한테 화내지 않을 거지, 조지? 화내? 응, 레니가 말했다. 네가 나한테 항상 말하는 거 알잖아, 너는 말하지, 너만 없으면 내가 50 달러를 가질텐데...

 

'My God, Lennie!' cried George. 'You can't remember anything that happens, but you remember every word I say.'

'Well, aren't you going to say it?' asked Lennie.

George tried to repeat the well-known words. 'If I lived alone, I could have a really good time,' he said, but his voice had no interest in it. 'I could get a job without any trouble.' George stopped speaking.

세상에 레니! 조지가 소리쳤다. 넌 무엇이 일어나건 하나도 기억 못하는 주제에 내 말은 모조리 외우잖아. 그럼, 그렇게 말하지 않을 거야? 레니가 물었다. 조지는 잘 아는 말을 다시 하려 했다. 내가 혼자라면, 정말 좋은 시간을 보낼 텐데, 그가 말했다. 하지만 그 목소리는 흥미를 잃은 채였다. 아무 문제없이 일자리를 얻을 수 있을 텐데. 조지는 말을 멈췄다.

 

'Go on,' said Lennie. 'And at the end of the month . . .'

'And at the end of the month, I could take my fifty dollars and go into town and enjoy myself.' George stopped again.

Lennie looked eagerly at him' 'Go on, George,' he said' 'Aren't you going to be angry with me any more?'

'No,' said George.

'Well, I can go away,, said Lennie. .I'll go to the hills and find a cave if you don't want me.'

Again George tried to say what Lennie was expecting. 'No,' he said. 'I want you to stay here with me.'

계속해, 레니가 말했다. 그리고 매달 말에는... 그래, 매달 말에는 내 50 달러를 가지고 마을로 가서 즐길 텐데. 조지는 다시 말을 멈췄다. 레니가 열심히 그를 쳐다봤다. 계속해 조지, 그가 말했다. 나한테 더 화내지 않을 거야? 아니. 조지가 말했다. 그럼, 난 가도 되겠네, 레니가 말했다. 니가 날 원하지 않으면 난 언덕으로 가서 동굴을 찾아볼게. 다시 조지는 레니가 기대하는 말을 하려고 했다. 아니, 그가 말했다. 난 니가 나와 함께 머무르기를 바래.

 

Now Lennie wanted to hear about other things. 'Tell me,' he said.

'Tell you what, Lennie?'

'About the other men and about us.'

이제 레니는 다른 것에 관해서 듣고 싶었다.

'Men like us have no family and no home,' George began. 'They work for some money and then they spend it all. They've got nobody in the world to look after them . . .'

우리같은 사람들은 가족도 집도 없어, 조지가 이야기를 시작했다. 그들은 약간의 돈을 벌기 위해 일하고 나선 다 써버리지. 그들은 이 세상에 자기들을 돌볼 누구도 갖고 있지 않아.

 

'But not us,' Lennie cried happily' 'Tell me about us now.'

George was quiet for a moment.

'We're different,' he continued, 'because I've got you. . .'

하지만 우리는 아니야, 레니가 행복하게 소리쳤다. 이제 우리에 대해서 말해줘. 조지는 잠시 조용했다. 우리는 달라, 그가 계속했다. 왜냐하면 나에겐 너가 있고...

 

And I've got you!' added Lennie happily. 'We've got each other and we look after each other.'

The gentle evening wind blew across the river and through the trees. The leaves shook and little waves flowed up the green pool. Again there was the noise of men's voices' this time much closer than before.

그리고 나에겐 너가 있지! 레니가 행복하게 덧붙였다. 우리에겐 서로가 있어서 서로를 돌봐주지.

부드러운 저녁 바람이 강을 건너와 나무 새로 불었다. 나뭇잎들이 흔들렸고 초록 웅덩이엔 작은 물결이 피어났다. 다시 사람들의 목소리가 들렸고, 이번엔 전보다 훨씬 더 가까워졌다.

 

George took his hat off. He said nervously, 'Take your hat off, Lennie. The air feels fine.'

조지가 모자를 벗었다. 그는 불안하게 말했다. 모자를 벗어, 레니. 공기가 좋아.

 

Lennie took off his hat and put it on the ground in front of him. The shadow in the valley was bluer than before and the evening was approaching fast. The wind carried the sound of men rushing through trees and leaves towards them.

레니도 모자를 벗어 자기 앞에 내려놓았다. 계곡 그림자는 더 푸르게 변했고 저녁은 빠른 속도로 다가오고 있었다. 사람들이 나무들과 낙엽들 사이로 서둘러 그들에게 다가오는 소리들이 바람을 타고 들려왔다.

 

'Tell me how it's going to be,' said Lennie'

George had been listening to the distant sounds. For a moment he concentrated on what he was going to do. 'Look across the river, Lennie,' he said, 'and I'll tell you.'

앞으로 어떨지 말해줘, 레니가 말했다. 조지는 멀리서 나는 소리들을 듣고 있었다. 잠시 동안 그는 무엇을 해야 할지에 관해 집중했다. 강을 건너다봐, 레니. 그가 말했다. 그러면 내가 말해줄게.

 

Lennie turned his head and looked across the pool at the darkening Gabilan mountains. Then George began to speak again. ''We're going to get a little ranch,' George began. He put his hand into his side pocket and brought out Carlson's pistol. He held it in his hand, on the ground behind Lennie's back, and then looked at the back of Lennie's head.

레니가 고개를 돌려서 웅덩이 너머 어둑어둑한 가빌란 산맥을 바라봤다. 그러자 조지가 다시 말하기 시작했다. 우린 작은 목장을 가질 거야, 조지가 이야기를 시작했다. 그는 손을 옆주머니에 넣어서 칼슨의 권총을 꺼냈다. 그것을 손에 들고, 레니의 등 뒤 땅바닥에 대고는, 레니의 뒤통수를 바라보았다.

 

A man's voice shouted in the distance by the river, and another man answered.

'Go on,' said Lennie. 'Tell me about the ranch.'

George raised the pistol, but his hand shook, so he lowered it to the ground again.

'Go on,' said Lennie again. 'Tell me how it's going to be. We're going to get a little ranch.'

계속해줘, 레니가 말했다. 목장에 대해서 말해줘. 조지가 권총을 들었지만 손이 떨려서 다시 땅으로 내렸다.

계속해줘, 다시 레니가 말했다. 앞으로 어떨지 말해줘. 우리는 작은 목장을 갖는 거지.

 

'We'll have a cow,' said George. 'And perhaps we'll have a pig and some chickens . . . and near the house we'll have an alfalfa field.'

우린 소 한 마리를 기르고, 조지가 말했다, 그리고 어쩌면 돼지 한 마리랑 닭들도... 그리고 집 근처에는 알팔파 밭을 일굴거야.

 

'For the rabbits,' Lennie shouted.

'For the rabbits,' George repeated.

'And I'm going to look after the rabbits.'

'And you're going to look after the rabbits,' George repeated.

토끼들을 위해서, 레니가 소리질렀다. 토끼들을 위해서, 조지가 따라했다.

Lennie laughed happily. 'And we're going to live, really live,' he said.

'Yes.'

Lennie turned his head.

레니가 행복하게 웃었다. 그리고 우리는 살거야, 정말 삶을 살거야. 그가 말했다.

그래. 레니가 고개를 돌렸다.

 

'No, Lennie,' said George. 'Look across the river and try to imagine you can see the ranch.'

아니, 레니, 조지가 말했다. 강 건너를 보면서 목장을 볼 수 있다고 상상해봐.

 

Lennie obeyed him. George looked down at the pistol.

Now George could hear footsteps running through the nearby trees. George turned and looked towards them.

레니가 조지의 말대로 했다. 조지는 권총을 내려다봤는데, 이제 그는 발자국 소리들이 근처 나무들로 뛰어오는 것을 들을 수 있었다. 조지는 몸을 돌려 그들 쪽을 봤다.

 

'Go on, George,' said Lennie once more. 'When are we going to the ranch?'

'We're going there soon.'

'You and I, together,' said Lennie.

계속해줘, 조지. 레니가 다시 한번 말했다. 목장에는 언제 가지?

이제 곧 갈거야. 너랑 나랑 함께, 레니가 말했다.

 

'Yes, together,' said George. 'Everybody's going to be kind to you. There won't be any more trouble. Nobody will hurt anybody and nobody will steal anything from anybody.'

그래, 함께, 조지가 말했다. 모두들 너에게 친절할 거야. 더 이상 문제도 없을 거야. 아무도 다른 사람을 다치게 하지 않고, 아무도 다른 사람으로부터 어떤 것도 훔치지 않을 거야.

 

Lennie said, 'I thought you were angry with me, George.'

'No,' said George, 'I'm not angry now. That's something I want you to understand.'

레니가 말했다. 난 네가 나한테 화났을 거라고 생각했어, 조지.

아냐, 조지가 말했다. 난 이제 화나지 않았어. 그걸 니가 이해해주었으면 해.

 

Now the men's voices were very close. George listened to them and raised the pistol.

이제 사람들의 목소리는 매우 가까웠다. 조지는 그것을 듣고 권총을 들었다.

 

'Let's do it now,' Lennie said. 'Let's get that ranch now.'

'Of course,' said George. 'We'll do it now.'

지금 하자, 레니가 말했다. 지금 목장을 사자.

George raised the pistol, held it steadily and pointed it at the back of Lennie's head. His hand started to shake violently, but then he knew what he had to do and his hand became steady again. He pulled the trigger. The sound of the shot could be heard through the whole valley. Lennie's body shook heavily, and then he fell slowly on to the sand and lay there without moving.

조지가 권총을 들어 올렸고, 그것을 차분하게 잡고 레니의 뒤통수를 겨누었다. 손이 격렬히 떨리기 시작했지만 그는 자신이 할 일을 알고 있었고, 그의 손도 다시 차분해졌다. 그는 방아쇠를 당겼다. 총소리가 계곡 전체에서 들렸다. 레니의 몸이 무겁게 흔들리더니 천천히 모래위로 쓰러져선 움직이지 않고 그대로 있었다.

 

George shivered and looked at the pistol, then he threw it away as far as he could.

The nearby trees seemed to be full of shouting and the sound of running feet. Slim's voice shouted, 'George! Where are you, George?'

조지는 몸을 떨면서 권총을 바라보았고, 다음엔 가능한 한 멀리 그것을 던져버렸다. 근방의 나무들이 고함소리와 달려오는 발소리로 가득한 듯 했다. 슬림의 목소리가 소리쳤다. 조지! 어디 있소, 조지?

 

But George stayed on the bank. He sat quite still and looked at his hand that had thrown the pistol away. The men appeared and ran towards him, with Curley at the front.

그래도 조지는 강둑에 그대로 있었다. 그는 조용히 움직이지 않고 앉아서 권총을 던져버린 손을 들여다보았다. 컬리를 선두로 사람들이 나타나더니 그를 향해 뛰어왔다.

 

Curley saw Lennie lying on the sand. 'By God, you got him,' he said. He looked down at Lennie, and then he looked back at George. 'Right in the back of the head,' Curiey said quietly.

컬리가 모래 위에 누운 레니를 보았다. 젠장, 당신이 그를 처치했군. 그가 말했다. 그는 레니를 내려다보곤 조지를 되돌아봤다. 뒤통수에 정통으로, 컬리가 조용히 말했다.

 

Slim went to George and sat down very close to him. 'Never mind,' said Slim. 'Sometimes a man has got to do certain things.'

But then Carlson asked George, 'How did you do it?'

슬림이 조지에게 가서 곁에 앉았다. 신경 쓰지 말아요, 슬림이 말했다. 때로 사람은 어떤 일을 해야 하죠. 그때 칼슨이 조지에게 물어보았다. 어떻게 한 거요?

 

'I just did it,' said George. His voice sounded very tired.

'Did he have my pistol?'

'Yes. He had your pistol,' replied George.

'And did you take it from him and kill him?' asked Carlson.

'Yes. That's how I did it.' George's voice was almost a whisper.

He was still looking at his right hand that had held the pistol.

그냥 했어요. 조지가 말했다. 그의 목소리는 매우 지쳐있었다.

그가 내 권총을 갖고 있었소? 그래, 그가 갖고 있었소, 조지가 대답했다.

Slim touched George's shoulder. 'Come on, George,' he said. 'We'll go into town and have a drink.'

George let Slim help him to stand up.

조지는 슬림이 그를 도와 일으켜 세우도록 놔뒀다.

 

'You had to do it, George,' said Slim. 'You had to do it. Come with me now.' He led George to the path and away towards the road to Soledad.
